Nokia X hacked to run Google Play Store

Posted by Unknown
Nokia X, the recently announced series of smartphones that run a heavily modified version of Android, has been hacked to run the Google Play Store and key Google services.

While Nokia has replaced key APIs and services, including Google's Maps and applications marketplace, with its own apps and Microsoft's services, an XDA ddevelopers forum member has posted a way to root the Nokia X so that it could run the Google launcher, Play Store and other Google apps, including Gmail and Maps.

One of the reasons why the apps work is that Nokia has apparently left the application framework untouched in order to allow apps from third-party app stores work on the phone.

Nokia has mentioned on its official SDK page that the phone will be able to run around 75% Android apps without any modifications. Developers only need to make changes if their apps use Google services for push notifications, maps or in-app payments.
It's worth pointing out that rooting the phone will void its warranty. Also, unlike Android, Google's own suite of apps are not open source, so technically, it's not legal.

With the Nokia X series, the handset giant is targeting the budget segment - just above its Asha series and just below the Windows Phone-run Lumia series - trying to leverage Android's app ecosystem, which is comparatively richer than Windows Phone.

It is also worth noting that Nokia's handsets division has been acquired by Microsoft and the transaction will be complete in a few weeks. It's not clear if Microsoft will continue with the X-series as it runs an OS developed by its arch rival, Google.

Sony announces Xperia Z2 with 4K video recording, 20.7MP camera and noise cancelling audio

Posted by Unknown
IF WATCHING movies, taking photos, recording videos and listening to music is what you use your phone for, then Sony’s new flagship Xperia Z2 could be the device for you.
Announced today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Xperia Z2 is a technology monster packing in 4K video capture capability and Sony’s brilliant Full HD display this time in 5.2-inch size.
It’s also the first phone in the world to have digital noise cancelling technology, letting you listen to music clearly without interruptions in noisy places.
“We have redefined the smartphone once again with our camera. Xperia Z2 offers an innovative experience that captures memories in stunning detail through 4K video shooting,” said John Featherstone, Managing Director, Sony Mobile Communications Oceania.
The Xperia Z2 has what Sony is claiming the world’s best camera and camcorder in a waterproof smartphone, being only the second phone to have 4K video recording capability and using an improved version of Sony’s brilliant 20.7-megapixel camera from last year.
A slew of new camera software features are also included like the new Timeshift mode which lets you record videos in 120 frames per second, allowing slow motion video similar to what the iPhone 5S does.
The screen borrows technology from Sony’s latest televisions, creating a 5.2-inch Full HD display with great colour reproduction and a viewing experience that Sony claims is “as close to reality as possible”.
Sony’s use of waterproof designs continue with the Xperia Z2, letting you record and take pictures underwater and never having to worry about getting your phone wet again.
Its other features include super quick 4G connectivity, a lag-free quad-core processor and a huge 3200mAh (twice the size of an iPhone 5s) battery which should keep you going all day without making you worry about your phone dying.
Sony also announced a new SmartBand fitness tracker and Xperia Z2 tablet which also includes Sony’s new noise cancelling technology and TV technology in its display.
While no exact release date or pricing has been announced, the Sony Xperia Z2 will be available on Telstra, Optus and Vodafone plus Sony’s own retail stores.
Specs:
— 5.2-inch Full High Definition display
— 2.3GHz quad-core processor
— 20.7-megapixel camera

Posted by Unknown
Gionee recently unveiled the world’s slimmest smartphone Gionee Elife S5.5. The world’s thinnest smartphone was revealed at Mobile World Congress 2014 which is taking place in Barcelona, Spain which is the biggest mobile event where different manufacturers launch their latest smartphones. The thickness of this smartphone is just 5.5 mm which makes it the thinnest smartphone which is ever built till now and we think that this is going to be the slimmest smartphone in the future too.
Gionee Elife S5.5 comes with a big 5-inch Super AMOLED display which provide a great widescreen view for all the videos and movies you play. So you can enjoy all your movies and games in High Definition in Gionee Elife S5.5. It has been said that the touchscreen which comes in Gionee Elife S5.5 is able to render the visuals in Full High Definition resolution which provides a great view. It also comes with multi-touch feature. Gionee Elife S5.5 comes with a 5 Mega Pixel camera which is mounted at an angle of 95 degrees and yeah this is not the rear camera, we are talking about the front camera. The front 5 Mega Pixel camera is great for taking selfies and will provide great quality while you are making video calls.
Gionee-Elife-S5.5
The world’s slimmest smartphone comes with a 13 Mega Pixel camera. If you are camera lover and love to click videos and take shots then Gionee Elife S5.5 is the smartphone for you. It comes with dual LED flash allowing you to take pictures in dark backgrounds and it also comes with auto focus feature. Elife S5.5 comes with charm camera feature along with footprint mode, auto wake up mode.
Coming to the processor, Gionee Elife S5.5 comes with a massive octa core 1.7 Ghz processor. With 1.7 Ghz octa core processor and 2 GB Ram you will be able to play all your games and do multitasking at its peak. Gionee Elife S5.5 takes its power from 2300 mAh battery which is non removable. We think that 2300 mAh battery won’t be enough as the smartphone comes with a massive processor. Gionee should have at least provided 3000 mAh battery for longer battery backup of the smartphone.
Gionee Elife S5.5 will run on Android v4.2 Jelly Bean Operating system. Gionee should have provided Android KitKat as the operating system as most of the smartphones which are coming these days are having Android KitKat installed in it, but we think that Gionee will soon provide an upgrade to the operating system of the smartphone, however you get the entire Google Play marketplace to get the latest and best Android apps and games.
Gionee Elife S5.5 will only come in one memory option and that is 16 GB. There is no slot for adding external memory card which is a bad idea. Gionee should have provided an external memory card slot for adding more memory later on. Gionee Elife S5.5 will be available in 5 different colors which are black, white, pink, blue and purple.
You will be able to get Gionee Elife S5.5 for $370 and it will be available in India from March.

Soon, free global Wi-Fi service from outer space?

Posted by Unknown
A US company is planning to build an 'Outernet' — a global network of cube satellites broadcasting internet data to all the people on the planet — for free. The idea is to offer free internet access to all people, regardless of location, bypassing filtering or other means of censorship, according to the New York based non-profit organization , Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF).

MDIF proposes that hundreds of cube satellites be built and launched to create a constellation of sorts in the sky, allowing anyone with a phone or computer to access Internet data sent to the satellites by several hundred ground stations.

The organization claims that 40% of the people in the world today are still not able to connect to the internet — and it's not just because of restrictive governments such as North Korea — it's also due to the high cost of bringing service to remote areas, 'phys.org' reported.

An Outernet would allow people from Siberia to parts of the western US to remote islands or villages in Africa to receive the same news as those in New York or Tokyo.

The Outernet would be one-way — data would flow from feeders to the satellites which would broadcast to all below. MDIF plans to add the ability to transmit from anywhere as well as soon as funds become available.

MDIF has acknowledged that building such a network would not be cheap. Such satellites typically run $100,000 to $300,000 to build and launch. The timeline for the project calls for deploying the initial cubesats as early as next summer.

Nokia, HTC make fun of Samsung Galaxy S5 launch

Posted by Unknown
WASHINGTON: Nokia and HTC have mocked Samsung's Galaxy S5 launch at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The two rivals took to Twitter to mock and disrupt the launch in a 'not-so-funny' manner.

According to CNET, HTC, a company with some nice phones but not without its own problems, tweeted: "Buyer's remorse: Coming soon to S5 owners. March 25."

The Taiwanese manufacturer went a step further by suggesting that a person would be an idiot to buy the Galaxy S5, akin to what Samsung tells iPhone buyers.

HTC has scheduled an event for March 25, where it is expected to launch the successor of its top smartphone One.

Nokia tweeted with an image of its own not-yet-legendary phones: "Stand out from the crowd! #MWC14 #UNPACKED. NOT THE SAMESUNG;)"

The 'unamusing' responses from the two companies failed to ruffle the South Korean giant's anticipated mobile and wearables launch at the event.

Samsung has, in the past, poked fun at Apple's iPhone launches, mocking the long lines of buyers and new iPhone features that its own Galaxy phones have had for several months.
